I won't go any further than this because I'm sure both of you guys get the idea. This same multiple XMP file technique could be used to actually create Develop Mode Layers. Can you imagine Layers in Develop Mode? In my vision for Pro9, I'm hoping for derivative images in Develop Mode - alternate versions of the same source image, created solely with additional XMP files.

What I've started thinking about is how to surpass Lightroom now that Alpha-channel support is in place. Layers are simply not a major factor in my workflow. I used Ult-8 Layers to create my Christmas card this year, but that's about it. Now my mind is asking "now that ACD has gone to all the trouble to build Alpha-channel support, what else could you do with that?" "What doors does that open?" I shoot all Raw and use Develop Mode almost exclusively. Not mention the support for Png transparency that the Scrapbooking folks have been requesting for years. And, because of the Alpha-channel, Ult8 can now create Layers. The Ult8 Erase tool works very nicely - easier than PS in my view. The enormity of that programming effort fairly boggles my mind.īut, now it's done - the Alpha channel is here. Now it can handle 32-bit and 64-bit images. ACDSee was previously only able to handle 24-bit or 48-bit standard images. In order to make Layers a reality, the entire ACDSee program had to be modified to include that forth color channel in addition to the existing RGB channels. Before Ult8, ACDSee was completely missing any support for the Alpha-channel. My change of mind is not because of Layers, but because of the Alpha-channel. Now, that some time has passed and Ultimate-8 is complete, I have changed my mind about this product strategy.

However, I rationalized that Edit Mode had been seriously neglected in Pro6 and Pro7. On the other hand, Edit Mode could probably never catch PS or PSP, even with years of development. That's where I would put my programming resources. In my view of possible ACD product strategies, Develop Mode can go head-to-head with Lightroom and is only a few features away from even surpassing it.

Initially, I thought the effort to program Layers in Edit Mode was a pretty questionable undertaking. And SCX - Since you two are knowledgeable and experienced ACD users, I'm going to take a little extra time to explain my take on this - which is slightly different than yours.
